Helping Your Nearsighted Child See a Brighter Future

Has your child been getting more nearsighted with each eye exam? Nearsightedness is on the rise among children, and we’re here to do everything we can to help. At Visionarium Optometry, we go beyond simply providing stronger glasses every year. Our focus is on controlling the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) to help protect your child’s eye health.

By slowing the worsening of myopia, we aim to keep your child’s prescription lower over time. This not only helps with clearer vision but also reduces their lifelong risk of serious eye conditions like macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and glaucoma.

We offer evidence-based myopia control methods, including overnight ortho-k lenses and soft contacts, backed by science and tailored to your child’s unique needs. Book your child’s eye exam with our pediatric eye doctor today.

Why Does Myopia Control Matter?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is more than just blurry distance vision. Left unchecked, it typically worsens over time as the eye continues to elongate, increasing the risk of serious eye diseases later in life.

While genetics play a role, time spent on screens or doing near work and less outdoor time are also contributing factors. For many parents, the cycle of needing a stronger prescription at each visit feels inevitable, but myopia control can change that.

By intervening early with our myopia control tools, we can slow or even halt this progression, saving your child from higher prescriptions and preserving their long-term eye health.

How We Manage Myopia Progression

At Visionarium Optometry, we utilize evidence-based myopia control methods tailored to your child’s needs. Our team will work with you to help you choose the right option for your child’s needs, lifestyle, disposition, and prescription.

We understand that myopia control is a new concept for many families. We’re happy to discuss how it helps, what the science says, and answer any questions that come up for you.

Ortho-k lenses are worn overnight while your child sleeps. These custom-fit lenses gently reshape the cornea, allowing for clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Many parents love ortho-k because it gives their kids freedom to play sports, swim, and explore without worrying about wearing glasses or contacts during the day. Dr. Quan has extensive experience in fitting contact lenses for patients of all ages.

MiSight 1 day and NaturalVue Multifocal are 2 types of soft contact lenses that are worn like regular daytime contacts, but are designed to slow myopia progression. They work by focusing the light that enters the eye in front of the retina, which acts as a “stop signal” for the eye to stop elongating.

As daily disposables, they’re an easy and hygienic choice for myopia control for many families.

Atropine is the same medication used during eye exams to dilate the pupil for a more in-depth examination. Low-dose atropine eye drops are used once daily and can be an effective way to help slow the progression of myopia.

We may recommend that atropine be used in combination with ortho-k or soft contacts, as it’s often an effective complement to other myopia control treatments.

What to Expect During Myopia Control Treatment

If your child is nearsighted, we’ll let you know in their eye exam everything you can expect throughout the myopia control journey.

  1. Comprehensive Evaluation: We’ll start with a detailed eye exam to evaluate your child’s visual system, eye health, and prescription.
  2. Personalized Plan: Based on your child’s needs, we’ll guide you through our recommended management options and answer all of your questions.
  3. Ongoing Care & Monitoring: Generally speaking, we’ll want to see them at least twice a year to monitor their progression and catch any other changes to their vision.

The Risks of High Myopia

Early control of myopia doesn’t just help their vision today, it protects their eye health in the future. Without intervention, higher myopia increases the likelihood of serious eye issues, including:

  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts at a younger age
  • Myopic macular degeneration

By working together now, we can help your child enjoy clearer vision and reduce their risk of avoidable complications later in life. When you book their eye exam, we will do everything possible to put your mind at ease and create a plan together.

Protect Your Nearsighted Child’s Vision with Myopia Control

If your child is nearsighted, regular glasses often aren’t enough. We can do more to protect their vision thanks to myopia control!

A nearsighted child can’t clearly see distant objects, and their sight tends to worsen as they grow. Typically, this worsening vision is due to their eyes growing longer than necessary, which raises the risk of certain eye diseases in the future.

With myopia control, we can prescribe specialized contact lenses that can correct their vision and slow the unwanted elongation of their eyes. We can also prescribe uniquely formulated eyedrops to slow the elongation of the eyes.
