Comprehensive Eye Exams for Adults & Children
At Visionarium Optometry, we believe the best vision care starts with understanding each person’s unique needs—how your eyes feel and perform for you every day. Our eye exams for adults and kids are supported by thorough pre-testing and diagnostic imaging, allowing us to fully understand the health of your eyes.
Not all eye issues present obvious symptoms, whether it’s your child not being able to see the board at school, your own eyes feeling uncomfortable by the end of the day, or even an eye disease that advances silently. Let us take care of all your vision needs in an exam at our San Francisco eye clinic.

The Difference Technology Makes in Your Eye Exam
Eye exams are a vital tool for maintaining eye comfort with the right glasses or contact lens prescription, detecting early signs of eye diseases, and promoting long-term eye health. Regular eye exams give us a chance to keep your prescription up to date and help us identify concerns before they impact your quality of life or become serious issues.
Our eye exams provide:
- Accurate prescription updates, starting with our automated refractor
- Detection and management of glaucoma, AMD, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and other conditions
- Thorough diagnosis and lasting solutions for dry eye
Pediatric eye care to get your child the right prescription, correct common concerns like lazy eye (amblyopia), and slow worsening nearsightedness

Your Eye Exam at Visionarium
Committing to your eye health and vision is a lifelong priority. We provide comprehensive eye exams for adults, designed to detect early signs of eye disease, improve the comfort and quality of your vision, and get you the right glasses when you need them.
We recommend annual eye exams for people who wear contact lenses, those with a high prescription, adults over 65, and anyone living with an eye disease or condition. For some patients, an eye exam every 2 years may be sufficient. We’ll recommend a personalized eye exam schedule during your visit.
At Visionarium, your eye exam is adapted to your needs. That means we personalize it based on any changes you’ve noticed in your vision or eye comfort, your lifestyle and how you use your eyes, and any overall health concerns.
A typical eye exam with us includes:
- Patient History Review: Discussion of medical history, vision concerns, and lifestyle needs.
- Visual Acuity Test: Checking how clearly you can see at various distances using an eye chart.
- Refraction Test: Starting with our automated refractor, we’ll determine your exact prescription for glasses or contact lenses.
- Eye Muscle Function Test: Assessing how well your eye muscles work together.
- Pupil Response Test: Evaluating how your pupils react to light and focus.
- Peripheral Vision Test: Checking for any blind spots or issues with side vision.
- Slit-Lamp Examination: Inspecting the front part of your eye (cornea, lens, eyelids) under magnification.
- Intraocular Pressure Test: Measuring your eye pressure to screen for glaucoma. Our quick test doesn’t use that annoying puff of air, either.
- Dry Eye Screening: We’ll ask you about some common dry eye symptoms and check your eye surface health to help identify signs of dry eye syndrome and provide recommendations for further care if needed.
- Retinal Exam or Retinal Imaging: Examining the back of your eye, including the retina and optic nerve. We may dilate your eyes for this examination. However, we can also use Optos retinal imaging for this evaluation, which typically doesn’t require dilation and provides an even more thorough view of your retina. This is recommended for those with eye disease or a family history of certain eye conditions.
We’ll always review our findings together and let you know what next steps we recommend.
For some patients, their regular diet may not provide all the necessary nutrients to support optimal eye health. During your eye exam, we’ll ask some key questions about your sensitivity to light, night vision, and diet to help determine if specially formulated ocular vitamins might be beneficial.
Our recommended EyePromise nutraceuticals can help alleviate dry eye symptoms, support macular health, and promote overall eye health.
We carry:
- EyePromise Restore: A clinically proven formula designed to preserve and support vision for those concerned with, at-risk for, or in the early stages of AMD.
- EyePromise AREDS 2 PlusZinc-Free: A zinc-free nutraceutical for eye health formulated with nutrients outlined in the AREDS 2 study, plus additional science-supported protective nutrients demonstrated to support aging eye health.
- EyePromise DVS: Nutritional support formulated for improved visual function, including macular pigment optical density (MPOD), color vision, contrast sensitivity, etc., without impacting normal glucose levels for those with diabetes.
- EyePromise EZ Tears: A daily nutraceutical for occasional dry eye and irritation to help produce more natural tears and relieve associated eye discomfort and irritation.
Many people live with the gritty redness, irritation, light sensitivity, or blurred vision caused by dry eye, but don’t realize that it’s a condition that can be managed.
During your eye exam, we’ll ask you some questions to help us understand any symptoms you’re experiencing in order to determine if you have dry eye disease. We’ll also ask about related conditions or medications that can worsen dry eye.
We may recommend a more thorough dry eye evaluation to pinpoint the underlying causes of your dry eye and create a personalized solution.
In a dry eye evaluation, we will:
- Do a noninvasive scan and imaging with our LipiView device to understand the health of your tear film and the meibomian glands that supply essential oil to your tears.
- Check your cornea for scratches or other damage that can be caused by dry eye.
- Recommend next steps for managing symptoms, including IPL or radiofrequency treatment, TearCare thermal expression of blocked meibomian glands, medicated eye drops, or other targeted care.

Children’s Eye Exams in San Francisco
Our Dr. Melton is a pediatric optometrist, and she knows exactly how to make eye exams engaging for your kid or teen. About 80% of your child’s learning relies on their eyesight! And it’s not always obvious if they’re having trouble with their vision until you come for an eye exam.
Children need regular eye exams starting from the age of 6 months to stay on top of their quickly growing and changing eyes. We recommend bringing them in for their first eye exam between 6–12 months old, again before preschool, and then annually once school starts. If your child is nearsighted, we may recommend a more frequent eye exam schedule to help us prevent their vision from worsening through myopia control.
In your child’s eye exam with Dr. Melton, she will:
- Provide a welcoming environment with fun toys and gadgets to keep your young child comfortable and engaged
- Use a kid-friendly eye chart designed for little ones who aren’t reading letters yet
- Screen for amblyopia (often called “lazy eye”) to catch and treat it as early as possible
- Check for refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism and provide a prescription
- Help you explore contact lenses for active kids who want freedom from glasses
- Find stylish and durable eyewear tailored to fit your child’s needs and personality
- Provide personalized myopia control plans to slow your child’s progression of nearsightedness.
- Evaluate and treat strabismus (crossed eyes) to prevent vision problems and improve coordination
We’d love to support your child’s healthy vision development. Request their next eye exam with us today.
Eye Disease Diagnosis & Treatment
Many eye diseases develop without apparent symptoms. Your eye exam can reveal both eye and systemic (entire body) issues. With our innovative diagnostic and imaging technology, we aim to detect potential problems early, preventing them from leading to vision loss due to glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other diseases.
Depending on your particular needs, we may recommend and use the following noninvasive technologies in your eye exam to help detect or monitor eye disease progression:
- Optos Retinal Imaging: Optos captures ultra-widefield high-resolution images of the key structures at the back of your eye (including the retina and optic nerve) to detect eye diseases like glaucoma and AMD in early stages. It can also detect early signs of cancer, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. Your Visionarium optometrist will display images of your retina and walk you through any findings.
- Optovue OCT-A: OCT-A is similar to an ultrasound for the eye, but it utilizes light waves to create a cross-sectional scan of the eye. It’s a quick, noninvasive way to give your optometrist a lot of important information about the blood vessels in your eyes. This allows us to better monitor and manage conditions, including diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and more.
- iCare Tonometer: This quick test measures the pressure inside your eye, called intraocular pressure. It’s a way for us to check for signs of glaucoma or to measure eye pressure in those living with glaucoma and adjust care if needed.

Protect Your Nearsighted Child’s Vision with Myopia Control
If your child is nearsighted, regular glasses often aren’t enough. We can do more to protect their vision thanks to myopia control!
A nearsighted child can’t clearly see distant objects, and their sight tends to worsen as they grow. Typically, this worsening vision is due to their eyes growing longer than necessary, which raises the risk of certain eye diseases in the future.
With myopia control, we can prescribe specialized contact lenses that can correct their vision and slow the unwanted elongation of their eyes. We can also prescribe uniquely formulated eyedrops to slow the elongation of the eyes.
